Honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – September 30, 2024

Boozhoo, Kwe Kwe, Tanisi, Shé:kon, Aniin, Bonjour, Hello, 

 

On September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we come together to honor the survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities who continue to feel the impact of these tragic chapters in Canada’s history. This day serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to remember, reflect, and take meaningful action toward reconciliation.

Emancipation Day is August 1st

August 1st is Emancipation Day in Canada. August 1st, 1834 marked the end of slavery across the British Empire – stressing that only those under the age of six were free. Enslaved people older than six years of age were re-designated as “apprentices” and required to work 40 hours per week without pay, as part of compensation to the enslavers. Full emancipation was not achieved until midnight on July 31, 1838.

Ontario Regional IRCC/IRB Conference

There will be an Ontario region IRB/IRCC Conference held from Friday, July 5, 2024 to Sunday, July 7, 2024 in Collingwood, Ontario. Travel if required, will take place on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

 

As it has been a few years since this region has held an IRB/IRCC Conference, you can expect for much discussion on issues faced by members in both departments, important and valuable training as well as time for resolution writing and debating.

 

Registration is due on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024. Please complete registration via the link below. Registrants will receive confirmation of delegate status the week of June 3rd, 2024.

May is Asian Heritage Month

The month of May marks the annual observance of Asian Heritage Month. In Canada, Asian Heritage month has been observed since 2001, when then-Senator Vivienne Poy brought the motion forward. At the time, Dr. Poy was the first person of Asian heritage to sit in the upper house of Canadian parliament, after having been appointed by former Prime Minister Jean Chretien in 1998.

National Day of Mourning - April 28

The National Day of Mourning, or Worker’s Mourning Day is observed annually on April 28th. This day is dedicated to those workers who have been killed, injured, or suffered illness due to workplace related hazards and occupational exposures. Traditionally, the Canadian flag flies at half-mast on Parliament Hill and all federal government buildings to honour those lives lost and the many affected by these tragedies.

Black History Month 2024

Black History Month, as the name implies, is a time to reflect upon the legacy of Black people in all facets of life, which has long since been glossed over, or only acknowledged from the lens of anti-black oppression, within mainstream schools of history. Indeed, it’s important to know the past, because it informs our present and our future.  

 

However, some scholars, anti-oppression activists and academic institutions with the support of their local Black communities, have suggested that equal recognition be given to Black Futures Month.The following article excerpt from Queen’s University’s Gazette in Kingston Ontario describes the proposed observance:
