Black History Month 2024

Black History Month, as the name implies, is a time to reflect upon the legacy of Black people in all facets of life, which has long since been glossed over, or only acknowledged from the lens of anti-black oppression, within mainstream schools of history. Indeed, it’s important to know the past, because it informs our present and our future.  

 

However, some scholars, anti-oppression activists and academic institutions with the support of their local Black communities, have suggested that equal recognition be given to Black Futures Month.The following article excerpt from Queen’s University’s Gazette in Kingston Ontario describes the proposed observance:

This year, CEIU Ontario members are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. Members can take this time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Canadians with African and Caribbean heritage who, throughout history, have done so much to make Turtle Island (Canada) the culturally rich, compassionate and prosperous nation we know today. It is also an opportunity for all of us to learn about the wide range of Black experiences and the vital roles this community has played throughout our shared history.

2023 CEIU Ontario SouthWest District Conference Summary

The Canada Employment and Immigration Union (CEIU) Ontario Region, a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), held its 2023 Southwest District Conference at the DoubleTree Hilton in Windsor, ON from October 13 to October 15, 2023.

 

At the conference this year, there were 12 delegates representing 8 of the 11 locals from the Southwest region in Ontario in addition to 4 members from the CEIU Ontario Regional Council. There were a handful of first-time delegates as well.
